I was recently given Sonny Rollins' Road Shows Vol. 1 by my special someone... and this album, like most other Sonny albums I own, certainly didn't disappoint. The album is actually a compilation, hand picked by Sonny, from some of his best live shows. They range from a performance in Warsaw, Poland in 1980 to his performance with Christian McBride and Roy Haynes at Carnegie Hall in 2007.
My first reaction to this album was one of amazement, as usually happens when I first listen to a revered artist that I hold in such high esteem. Sonny's playing seems to be as vivacious and adventurous as it did in the 1950's. Another factor that makes these seven tracks feel so alive and energetic is the fact that they were from live shows, and it is no secret that Sonny Rollins has always been known for his live performances. My personal favorite is track 5, an especially bluesy rendition of Tenor Madness.
